In France 11 000 new cases of lymphoma are diagnosed each year. Lymphomas represent in order frequency of cancers the 6th rank occurring in men and women. A few figures allow us to better understand the reality of this unknown cancer.
Lymphoma in numbers lymphomas represent the 6th rank in order of frequency of cancers and the 7th in terms of cause of death by cancer in France. Almost one in two patients with lymphoma dies of their disease. Men are slightly more affected than women (for non-Hodgkin lymphomas, sex ratio is 1.7). In the figures below, Hodgkin lymphomas and Hodgkin lymphomas or Hodgkin's disease are distinguished.
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas
Non-Hodgkin (NHL) lymphomas are the most common lymphomas, with over 9 900 new cases estimated each year in France;
The number of deaths is more than 5200 per year;
The median age at the time of diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is 64 years in humans and 70 years in women;
Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in the incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphomas of 3 to 5% per year, partly related to population ageing. Environmental factors (exposure to toxic) have also been implicated in explaining this increase in incidence. A recent report of the Institute of Health Care has thus retained this disease as one of the six cancers to be particularly monitored as being able to have environmental causes;
The median survival time of a treated follicular NHL patient is 8 to 10 years. In the extended or advanced forms of the disease, conventional treatments usually do not allow a definitive cure but are intended to prolong the life-time without sickness and life expectancy.
However, the percentage of survival at 10 years varies considerably depending on the severity of the disease at the time of diagnosis:

Aggressive NHL are diseases that evolve very quickly, but a substantial proportion of patients with effective treatment will be definitively cured of their lymphoma. The median survival time at 5 years of the patients depends on the severity of the disease at the time of diagnosis:

Hodgkin lymphomas
Hodgkin lymphomas (Hodgkin's disease) affect just over 1 300 new people each year in France;
There are two peaks of Hodgkin's disease frequency: one around 30 years, the other around 60 years;
The number of new cases of Hodgkin's disease has been stable over the last few decades, even declining;
Mortality of Hodgkin's disease is declining, with a majority of patients cured in the long term.
