What is brain cancer?





Brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (benign). They are the result of an abnormal increase in brain tissue. 1

Since the brain is below the intense bone cages of the skull, any increase or tumor that occurs in these tissues can produce pressure on sensitive brain tissues. This leads to the handicap of various brain and nerve functions including problems in visibility, speech, rest etc. (1)

Brain Structure
The brain is made up of three important areas of operation. The larger part is the brain. It's the brain as we know it. It is the source of thinking, memory, speech, learning, displaying, writing, cognition and movement by the will.

The more lumbosacral-sacred region of the brain is called the cerebellum. This sets the position, the rest and the movement.

The brain is plugged into the spinal cord to an area called the brainstem. This regulates the most indispensable functions such as heartbeats, breathing and muscles that regulate visibility, auditory operation, consumption and movement.

The brain is bathed in a liquid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is packaged in the membrane as holsters called the brains. 2

Types of brain tumor
Brain tumors can be of two basic types: primary or secondary. The latter is also known as metastatic.

Primary tumors come from the brain tissue. These tumors are not discarded from one to another and are not in most preventable cases. Metastatic tumors are often a result of cancer that has spread from another place of origin. 1

Primary brain tumors can come from brain cells or nerves, or glands or holsters that cover the brains called brain tissue. These tumors, if cancerous, can literally erode parts of the brain by causing inflammatory changes regardless of producing pressure on the surrounding nervous tissues.

Cause of primary brain tumors
The exact reason for the origin of primary brain tumors is still unknown. These may occur because of defective genetics-for example in cases of neurofibromatosis, von Hippel Lindau syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, or Turcot tuberous syndrome or MS etc. or give entitlement due to exposure to Cancer causing toxins or radiation therapy.

Studies show this exposure to brain radiation, which is often used for the demand for the resolution of brain cancers as well, are often responsible for raising the risk of brain tumors for 20 to 30 years.

Exposure to radiation as an element of occupational risk in power line workers, as well as those with the history of smoking, head injury, hormone replacement therapy, were not cited as risk factors for Brain tumors.

There is a controversy if the use of mobile phones and wireless devices are responsible for the increased risk of brain tumors. This requires more study.

Infections with Epstein-Barr virus, this raises the risk of blood cancer, such as lymphoma, can start in the brain as cancer is also recorded. 3

Cause of secondary brain tumors
Metastatic brain cancers can spread from a breast, melanoma, kidney, bladder, or advanced lung cancer. Lesions can also rule out cancers of sarcomas, testicular or germ cells.

Some cancers, however, do not usually deviate to the brain promptly. These include prostate and colon cancer.

Sometimes the original site of the tumor that has strayed to the brain is not found. It is called cancer of unknown primary origin (trough).

About a quarter of all cancers that spread or metastasize are brain tumors. These secondary cancers are more common than primary brain tumors and are seen in 10-30% adults with cancer. These metastatic lesions are often seen in terminally-phased patients and are likely to be fatal. (1, 4)

Brain Cancer in children
Brain cancers can occur in children as well. In fact after blood cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, brain tumors are the third most common cancers in children.

In most of these cases tumors are primary in nature and the exact cause is unknown.

Currently early detection and demand for the resolution of brain tumors and cancers is of paramount importance. In many cases brain cancers and tumors have a tendency to reproduce after remission. This is especially seen in children with primary brain tumors. 2
